Why You Drift But Don’t Drop (and What to Do About It).

Why You Drift But Don’t Drop (and What to Do About It).
Your body wants to sleep—it just doesn’t know how to stay there.
You’re not not sleeping.
You fall asleep—kind of.
Then you wake.
Then drift again.
Then wake again.
You stay near the surface, but never quite sink.
And in the morning?
You feel foggy.
Unfinished.
Like you’ve lived two nights in one.
This is a pattern.
The Restless River Rhythm:
This is what we call Restless River.
It moves in and out.
It doesn’t resist sleep—it just can’t hold onto it.
Rest comes… but doesn’t stay.
Why It Happens.
Restless River shows up when the nervous system isn’t fully anchored.
Often during:
- Emotional processing.
- Life transitions.
- Hormonal shifts.
- Periods of internal change.
Your body is trying to rest.
But without enough structure, it can’t move into deeper, sustained sleep.
What It Feels Like.
You might notice:
- Falling asleep easily, but waking multiple times.
- Vivid, active, or scattered dreams.
- Waking between 3–5 a.m.
- Difficulty settling back into sleep.
- Feeling “off” or incomplete in the morning.
This is your body saying it hasn’t been supported yet.
What Actually Helps.
You don’t need deeper sleep.
You need something that helps your body stay there.
Think of it like this:
Rivers need banks.
So does your nervous system.
When your rhythm is this fluid, the goal is to add: gentle structure + consistent signals.
Not rigidity.
Not force.
Just enough containment to guide the current.
Try this:
Create a sense of containment.
Wrap yourself in a blanket or shawl. Let your body feel held.
Use simple herbal support.
Oatstraw, lemon balm, or passionflower—soft, steady, and calming.
Give your mind somewhere to land.
Write a few lines before bed. Not to analyze—just to clear space.
Use your breath to settle.
Do a few rounds of inhaling for a count of 4, and exhale for a count of 6. Let the exhale lead you down.

You’re not a bad sleeper.

And once it does, sleep stops feeling like something you chase and starts becoming something your body can hold.
